Sleepless nights may feel like a parenting rite of passage, but constant 2am wake-ups don’t have to define your journey. The secret?

A consistent nighttime routine that helps babies feel safe, calm, and ready for sleep – and gives parents a chance to recharge.

“A predictable, calming bedtime routine gives your baby cues that it’s time to rest,” says Catherine Oluwadare, brand manager for Purity & Elizabeth Anne.

“It helps reduce anxiety, for both baby and parents, by creating structure, security, and a sense of calm before sleep.”

Here’s how to create a soothing, sleep-friendly rhythm that works for the whole family.

1. Start with a Splash

A warm bath is the perfect start. Not only does it relax tired muscles, but it’s also a bonding ritual. Follow up with a gentle baby massage to ease your little one into sleep mode – like a mini spa before bed.

2. Skip the Games

Once baby’s clean and cosy, keep stimulation low. Bright lights, noisy toys, and active play can make winding down harder. Instead, dim the lights, soften your voice, and focus on quiet cuddles.

3. Feed Before Bed

No one sleeps well on an empty stomach. A feed 15 minutes before bedtime can help your baby drift off faster and stay asleep longer. For younger babies, this “last feed” may mean fewer middle-of-the-night wake-ups.

4. Comfort Checklist

Before bedtime, check for common culprits that disrupt sleep:

  • Wet nappy
  • Room temperature (too hot/cold)
  • Snuffly nose or discomfort
Tip: A little Karvol on a nearby (but out-of-reach) handkerchief can help clear blocked noses.

5. End with a Lullaby or Story

Calm sounds are your bedtime allies. Read a short story, hum a lullaby, or simply talk softly. Babies find comfort in familiar voices and rhythms, helping them settle with ease.

6. Stick with It

Consistency is key. Even during teething or sleep regressions, sticking to your usual routine makes it easier for baby to return to good sleep habits. Patience pays off.

7. Know When to Seek Help

If your baby is unusually restless, fussy, or waking often despite a solid routine, there could be underlying issues such as teething, colic, or illness. When in doubt, consult your paediatrician.

Sweet Dreams Are Possible

While no routine guarantees perfect nights, the right structure helps your baby feel secure and supported – and helps parents reclaim some much-needed rest.

“Every baby is different, and finding what works may take time, but with love, patience, and routine, better nights are possible,” says Oluwadare.
