Does my child need glasses?

As a parent, it’s natural to be concerned about your child’s health, and vision is an important aspect that can impact their cognitive development and learning. “Identifying whether your child needs glasses can sometimes be challenging, but understanding the signs can help you make an informed decision,” explains Wesley Language from Execuspecs.

Here, he shares some key indicators to watch for.

1. Frequent squinting: squinting is one of the most common signs that your child may have impaired vision. When a child squints, they may be trying to reduce the amount of light entering their eyes, thereby improving focus. This can indicate near-sightedness or far-sightedness.

2. Sitting too close to screens: if your child consistently sits very close to the television or holds digital devices close to their face, it may be a sign of near-sightedness. This condition makes it difficult to see objects clearly at a distance.

3. Complaints of headaches: frequent headaches, especially after reading or doing homework, can be a sign of eye strain. If your child is experiencing this regularly, it might be due to uncorrected vision issues.

4. Covering one eye: children may cover one eye while reading or watching TV to compensate for double vision or to improve clarity. This can indicate issues like astigmatism or other vision imbalances.

5. Difficulty concentrating:  vision problems can make it hard for a child to focus on tasks, particularly those that require visual attention, such as reading or writing. If your child seems easily distracted or struggles to maintain concentration, it might be worth investigating their vision.

6. Rubbing eyes frequently:   while rubbing eyes occasionally is normal, frequent rubbing can be a sign of eye strain, fatigue, or discomfort, potentially indicating an underlying vision problem.

7. Avoiding reading or close work: if your child is reluctant to engage in activities that require close vision, such as reading or puzzles, it could be due to the difficulty they experience with seeing up close. This can be a sign of far-sightedness.

8. Complaining of blurry vision: children who complain of blurred vision, either when looking at things up closely or at a distance, may be experiencing refractive errors that require correction with glasses.

When to seek professional help

If you notice any of these signs in your child, it’s important to schedule a comprehensive eye examination. Little Visionaries by Execuspecs offers specialised eye care services for children. They understand the unique needs of young patients and provide thorough eye assessments to ensure your child’s vision is optimal. Their Little Visionaries initiative provides a free eye test, frames, and single-vision lenses for children between the ages of six and 12. “We believe every child has the right to see, and if vision problems are detected early, we can help change a child’s life forever,” says Language.
