From road trips to reunions, discover baby travel essentials every mum needs for stress-free festive journeys.

The festive season brings family time, long drives and special reunions. It also requires additional planning when travelling with a baby or toddler. Feeding schedules, nap times and unexpected moments require preparation. With the right essentials, travel feels calmer and more enjoyable.

“The festive season is about connection and creating memories,” says Lizeth Kruger, Dis-Chem Baby City Clinic Executive. “When mums prepare properly, they reduce stress and enjoy the journey with their little ones.”

Here are her practical tips for smooth holiday travel with a baby.

A well-packed baby bag

Your nappy bag is your travel base. Pack with intention.

Include:
• Nappies and wipes
• Bum cream
• Extra outfits
• A receiving blanket
• A lightweight changing mat

Keep everything easy to reach. You avoid panic stops and rushed searches.

Travel-friendly feeding essentials

Hunger escalates quickly on the road.

Pack:
• Sterilised bottles or breastfeeding covers
• A flask with warm water
• Bibs and burp cloths
• Feeding spoons and bowls
• Easy toddler snacks
• A cooler bag for milk

Preparation keeps feeding calm and predictable.

Sun protection for little travellers

South African sun requires extra care.

Bring:
• Baby-safe sunscreen
• A wide-brimmed hat
• Breathable clothing

Choose transport wisely. A stroller with a sunshade works well. Baby carriers offer flexibility in busy spaces. Add car window sunshades or a stroller canopy for extra protection.

A safe and comfortable car seat

Safety stays non-negotiable.

Before departure:
• Check correct installation
• Confirm the base angle
• Ensure straps sit snug and untwisted

Babies under one year or under 80cm must travel rear-facing. Rear-facing seats support the head, neck and spine and reduce injury risk.

Sleep essentials to protect routine

Travel disrupts sleep patterns. Familiarity restores comfort.

Pack:
• A favourite blanket or soft toy
• A portable cot or travel nest

Follow bedtime rituals where possible. Familiar cues help baby settle faster.

Entertainment for the journey

A calm baby supports a calm trip.

Bring:
• Rattles
• High-contrast board books
• Teething toys
• Sensory toys

Rotate items throughout the journey to maintain interest and reduce fussiness.

First-aid and health must-haves

A prepared kit avoids stress.

Include:
• Baby-safe pain relief
• A thermometer
• Saline nasal spray
• Infant-friendly mosquito repellent
• Hand sanitiser and surface wipes

Busy travel seasons increase exposure to germs.

Extra everything

Pack more than you expect to use.

Extra:
• Nappies
• Wipes
• Clothes
• Snacks

Overpacking prevents unnecessary stress. Babies thrive on preparedness.

Travel with confidence this festive season

With planning and the right essentials, holiday travel becomes easier and more enjoyable. Slow down. Stay flexible. Enjoy the moments in between. These early journeys become cherished memories faster than you realise.
