Lebo M live in concert with special guest Hans Zimmer

by Richard van Staden

Get ready, Cape Town – something spectacular is coming your way!

On Friday, 18 April 2025, Grammy Award-winning legend Lebo M is taking the stage at the Grand Arena, GrandWest, for a once-in-a-lifetime concert experience like no other. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any more iconic… surprise! He’s bringing Hans Zimmer along for the ride. Yes, that Hans Zimmer.

This not-to-be-missed event marks 30 years since that unforgettable opening chant – “Nants’ ingonyama…” – introduced African music to the world through Disney’s The Lion King. Now, three decades later, the man behind the magic is coming home to celebrate a legacy that’s shaped global soundtracks and hearts alike.

Renowned composer, singer, songwriter, and music producer, Lebo M, will be joined by an all-star lineup including MiCasa, The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, The Soweto Spiritual Singers, The Ndlovu Youth Choir, Nkosinathi Shabalala and Refi Sings.

Together, they’ll bring the house down in a show that blends nostalgia, culture, and goosebump-inducing music.

Almost four decades into a career that started with The Power of One and skyrocketed with The Lion King, Lebo M has become a global ambassador for African music. From Oscar nominations to Grammy wins, he’s made his mark as a composer, producer, and performer – all while staying rooted in his heritage.

Now he’s coming full circle. “My music is – and always will be – rooted in home soil, and I couldn’t be more excited about staging my first live concert season in Cape Town. The music from The Lion King not only touched hearts and minds around the world, it continues to provide an inspirational platform to uplift local talent and inspire the next generation of creators,” says Lebo M.

And musical genius Hans Zimmer himself will be joining him on stage. “I am thrilled that we have been partners, brothers, and friends since childhood. We began our journey creating films about Africa at a time when few were willing to do,” says Zimmer.

This epic performance will be the grand finale of a week-long celebration of African excellence – empowering the next wave of artists and proving once again that music knows no borders.

This isn’t just a concert – it’s history in the making.
