The Cavern has been in the Carte family for 75 years, and from day one, they’ve focused on giving guests more than just a holiday. They’ve created a place where lifelong memories are made. It all began in 1941, with a letter from Bill Carte to Ruth: “Ruth, my darling, I plea as never before: Put your trust in me, marry me and be my mate in building up a home and a farm second-to-none in South Africa.”

In the 1970s, Peter and Anthony Carte stepped up to continue the dream, joined by their brilliant wives, Rhona and Jean. Together, they transformed the guest farm into a bustling resort – and by the 1980s, The Cavern was in full swing! Think new friendships, hiking up every Drakensberg peak, and ending each day with a bit of evening fun. It was a fabulous place for their seven cousins to grow up.

Today, The Cavern is proudly run by the third generation: Hilton and Megan Bedingham, along with Lesley Carte.

Fondly known as “The Resort of Many Happy Returns,” The Cavern is all about quality family time, memory-making, and embracing the great outdoors. Kids can fish, horse ride, swim, and play tennis while parents unwind and take in the peaceful mountain views.
