Summer means sunshine, braais and road trips. But while you plan the fun, remember that allergies can ruin a holiday.
One whiff of new pollen, a dusty holiday cottage or hours with car windows open, and the sneezing starts. A simple allergy kit helps you stay ahead. You avoid sniffles and spend your break enjoying the sun instead of rubbing your eyes.
Allergies often flare when you travel. New places bring new triggers, from grass and dust to pets and cleaning sprays in rental homes. Catherine Oluwadare, brand manager for Karvol, explains: “If you or someone in your family suffers from allergies, symptoms can strike at any time, especially in summer. The change in scenery and pollen count can trigger sneezing fits or itchy eyes, while packing into shared spaces often means exposure to new detergents, pet dander or fragrances.”
A prepared allergy kit saves you from having to hunt for a pharmacy mid-holiday. Pack it, keep it close, and you sort symptoms fast.
What to pack in your holiday allergy kit
- Antihistamines: Pack tablets or a non-drowsy syrup for the whole family. Speak to your doctor if needed.
- Decongestant support: Karvol capsules or Karvol room spray help ease blocked noses and support easier breathing.
- Eye drops: Soothe itchy or watery eyes. Choose preservative-free if you have sensitive eyes.
- Soothing cream or ointment: A mild hydrocortisone or calamine lotion can help alleviate rashes or insect bites.
- Wet wipes and tissues: Keep travel-size packs in your car or bag.
Extra prep for holiday homes
If you’re staying in a rental, pack a small disinfectant or sterilising spray such as Milton sterilising spray. A quick wipe of surfaces, linens and vents helps reduce dust and allergens, especially in homes closed up over winter.
Keep your kit handy
Store your allergy kit in a location where you can easily access it. Your glove box or day bag works best.
“South African summers are too beautiful to spend sniffling indoors,” says Oluwadare. “A little preparation goes a long way, so pack your allergy kit and hit the road knowing you’re ready for whatever comes your way.”
Enjoy your summer—no sneezing required.
