Equip Yourself with Mental Wellbeing Skills for Life

Discover 10 expert tips from Netcare Akeso on building resilience and nurturing lasting mental wellbeing this World Mental Health Day.

Good mental health and emotional wellbeing are often taken for granted, yet maintaining this balance through life’s challenges can be difficult for anyone.

“This World Mental Health Day, commemorated on Friday, 10 October, reminds us that mental health is a constant work in progress — not a goal we achieve once and for all,” says Megan Gonsalves, Netcare Akeso 24-hour Crisis Line Manager.

“It’s a journey, not a destination. Mental wellbeing requires us to invest in self-care continually — not just in times of crisis. Our wellbeing should be nurtured as part of everyday life, setting us up to cope with whatever comes our way.”

Ten Practical Habits for Mental Wellbeing

1. Celebrate Gratitude

“When we make it a habit to appreciate everyday blessings, we naturally shift our focus to the positive. This eases stress and anxiety and helps counter the negative thoughts that come with depression,” says Gonsalves.

2. Stay Connected

Social interaction builds a sense of belonging and support. “Loneliness and isolation are major risk factors for mental illness. Fostering connection reminds us that we’re not alone,” she adds.

3. Make It Mindful

“Being present in the moment helps reduce stress and improves emotional clarity,” she says. Mindfulness keeps you focused on the now instead of being overwhelmed by past regrets or future worries.

4. Prioritise Physical Health

Exercise, sleep, and nutrition form the foundation of mental wellbeing. “Quality sleep and regular movement improve mood and cognitive function, while balanced nutrition keeps the body and mind strong.”

5. Limit Social Media

Excessive scrolling has been linked to anxiety and depression. “Stay aware of how much time you spend online and how it affects your state of mind,” Gonsalves advises. “Real-world socialising should always come first.”

6. Explore a New Interest

A new hobby refreshes your focus, relieves stress, and boosts confidence. Whether it’s painting, hiking, or gardening, learning something new brings joy and energy.

7. Make Yourself a Priority

“It’s okay to say no,” says Gonsalves. “Taking time to refill your own cup reduces stress and strengthens emotional resilience.”

8. Seek Professional Support

Speaking to a therapist or counsellor provides tools to cope and build resilience. “Early support prevents deterioration and can help avoid a crisis point.”

9. Track Your Mental Health

Journalling helps identify patterns and triggers. “Understanding your emotions helps you manage them and seek help early if needed,” she notes.

10. Be Kind and Informed

“Knowledge reduces stigma,” Gonsalves says. “Recognising early warning signs and practising self-compassion can make all the difference in maintaining mental wellbeing.”

Building Resilience, One Habit at a Time

“Making these habits part of your lifestyle strengthens your emotional resilience and helps you face tough times with greater confidence,” says Gonsalves. “Small steps now can make a big difference when you need your inner strength most.”
