Aladdin brings the magic to Canal Walk

by Richard van Staden

Canal Walk’s beloved winter theatre production is lighting up the stage once again this June with a dazzling new take on Aladdin. And this year, there’s even more reason to celebrate – the centre’s winter theatre tradition turns 23!

Every winter, Canal Walk transforms its Centre Court into a vibrant theatre space, packed with colourful costumes, original scripts and feel-good stories. For thousands of families, these shows have become part of their school holiday tradition. This year’s production of Aladdin promises all the excitement of the Arabian Nights classic – flying carpets, hidden treasure, a cheeky Genie, and a young hero who discovers what it really means to be brave.

“This year is a little extra special for us,” says Vanessa Herbst, marketing manager at Canal Walk. “For 23 years, we’ve seen families make this show part of their winter holidays. We’ve had toddlers who are now bringing their own children to the theatre! That connection is what keeps us inspired.”

A fresh twist on a classic

Set in the bustling streets of old Baghdad, this production tells the tale of Aladdin, a young dreamer whose life changes forever when he finds a magical lamp. What follows is a mix of adventure, laughter, and heart, all set to original songs that’ll have you tapping your feet.

The show is brought to life by the talented team at AM Productions. Directors Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer co-wrote the script, with Meyer also composing the music and lyrics. The cast features Anzio September as Aladdin, Mekaila Mathys as the bold Princess Jasmir, and Onela Metuso as the larger-than-life Genie. With a dynamic ensemble adding plenty of flair and fun, it’s a production packed with stage magic.

Entertainment that gives back

This year’s show is supporting a brilliant cause. Part of the ticket and programme sales will go to The Reach Trust, helping young children in underserved communities access early learning and digital literacy resources. “Each ticket is more than a night out – it helps open up learning opportunities,” says Andrew Rudge, CEO of The Reach Trust.

If past years are anything to go by, tickets will fly faster than a magic carpet. “After 23 years, the magic just keeps growing,” says Herbst. “This year’s Aladdin is packed with sparkle, laughter and surprises – we can’t wait to share it with you.”
