The beloved Australian animated series, Bluey, is set to leap from screens into the hearts of South African families with the highly anticipated debut of Bluey’s Big Play – The Stage Show.
Following a successful international tour across Australia, Europe, North America, and beyond, Bluey is prepared to enchant children and adults alike in South Africa this coming winter school holidays.
Running from 26 June to 6 July at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town and from 9 July to 20 July at Montecasino’s Teatro in Johannesburg, this interactive live performance promises to be a magical experience, capturing the essence of the show’s charm and imagination. Kate O’Connor, Director of Brands and Licensing at BBC Studios ANZ, shared, “Following the incredible reaction to the live theatre show in different parts of the world, we are so excited to bring Bluey’s Big Play to fans in South Africa.”
The stage adaptation follows Bluey and her family through a whimsical day full of laughter and resourcefulness, as the precocious Bluey and her younger sister, Bingo, pull out all the stops to coax their dad off the bean bag for some quintessentially “Bluey” fun. This original story from creator Joe Brumm, infused with bespoke music from Bluey composer Joff Bush, ensures that both die-hard fans and newcomers can dive into the world of the loveable Bluey. The show employs larger-than-life puppets, manipulated by talented puppeteers who breathe life into the iconic characters.
Time Out has dubbed Bluey’s Big Play as “a live adventure for fanatically beloved Australian hound Bluey,” while The Guardian praised its “sweet show” that sets tails wagging. The show’s global success is mirrored at home, where Bluey has become a household staple, crowned as the top children’s programme in Australia and rated as the number one kids’ show across CBeebies and Disney+ in the UK.
Bluey fans in South Africa can secure their tickets now, with prices starting at R100 for babies in arms to R500 for premium weekend seats. Each attendee, regardless of age, is required to hold a valid ticket. Live ticket sales can be found exclusively at www.showtime.co.za or www.ticketmaster.co.za.
With a strictly limited number of Meet & Greet Packages available, fans also have the opportunity to meet Bluey post-show, making this not just a performance but a shared family memory.
As this whimsical production embarks on its first performances in South Africa, the anticipation is palpable. Andrew Kay, producer of Bluey’s Big Play, emphasised, “We are thrilled to bring this show to South African audiences, and we can’t wait for families to enjoy all the fun and excitement of having Bluey and her family live on stage.”
