by Richard van Staden

Fancy a bit of a nostalgia trip? Ster-Kinekor is serving up a seriously fun dose of May Movie Madness with their Throwback Cinema line-up — and at just R50 a ticket, it’s a total steal. Whether you’re revisiting old favourites or catching them on the big screen for the first time, this is your sign to plan that movie night (or five).

Get ready for a dose of nostalgia with Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema line-up this May! Here’s what to expect:

2 May: The Patriot
Mel Gibson stars as a peaceful farmer who’s forced into the brutality of the American Revolution after tragedy strikes his family. Directed by Roland Emmerich, this epic period drama also features Heath Ledger, Jason Isaacs and Joely Richardson. Big battles, big emotions and it hits differently on the big screen.

9 May: Night at the Museum

Ben Stiller is the night guard with the world’s weirdest job — watching museum exhibits come to life after hours. This 2006 family favourite is full of fun and fantasy, with appearances from Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais and more.

16 May: Philadelphia

Powerful, poignant, and still heartbreakingly relevant. Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington star in this Oscar-winning legal drama about justice, discrimination and friendship. Don’t forget the tissues and listen out for Bruce Springsteen’s haunting “Streets of Philadelphia”.

23 May: Thelma & Louise

The ultimate girls’ road trip… with a twist. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis shine in this iconic 1991 drama that’s thrilling, rebellious, and heart-wrenching all at once. Oh, and a young Brad Pitt makes an appearance too.

30 May: The Breakfast Club

Can you believe it’s been 40 years since five very different teens sat in detention and created movie magic? This John Hughes classic is back on the big screen, and it’s the perfect excuse to relive the angst, the laughs and the unforgettable 80s vibes.
