This Mandela Day, why not turn your 67 minutes into something truly meaningful and delicious? Chefs with Compassion is once again inviting South Africans to roll up their sleeves for the #67000litres campaign, a nationwide drive to cook up over 100 000 litres of soup to feed 400 000 people in need.
Now in its sixth year, the #67000litres for Mandela Day challenge is simple: cook, donate, or spread the word. Whether you’re a home cook with a half-full veggie drawer, part of a community group, or a company keen to give back, there’s a role for everyone.
Since kicking off in 2020, this heartwarming campaign has dished out over 450 000 litres of soup – that’s 1.8 million cups served to hungry South Africans. This year, the bar’s been raised, and the goal is bigger than ever.

Culinary schools like Capsicum, HTA, and the International Hotel School are already on board, alongside community kitchens, top chefs, and big names like Marriott through its CSI programme.
“Mandela Day is about service, and there is no more direct form of service than feeding someone who would otherwise go hungry,” says Chef Coo Pillay, president of SA Chefs and founding director of Chefs with Compassion. “Whether you’re making one litre or one hundred, you’re part of a movement that’s restoring dignity, reducing food waste, and showing what compassion looks like.”
Here’s how you can take part:
- Cook: Use what you have at home to make soup and share it with your community.
- Donate: Just R167 can help keep the pots bubbling.
- Get your company involved: Sponsor a community kitchen.
- Spread the word: Share your story using #67000litres.
