If you’ve ever wanted to introduce your little ones to the magic of opera—without expecting them to sit still for three hours – Cape Town Opera has the perfect solution!

On Sunday, 9 March at 11am, The Wave Theatre in Cape Town (44 Long Street) will be screening A Pocket Magic Flute, a delightful 40-minute film that brings Mozart’s The Magic Flute to life in an exciting, bite-sized format. Designed to captivate young audiences, this pioneering project reimagines the classic opera through an African lens, blending live action with animation for a visually stunning experience.

Behind this magical adaptation is Pocket Opera, a team dedicated to making opera accessible and fun. The film’s music features top African-American performers, alongside orchestral tracks played by talented young musicians from the Oakland and Sacramento Youth Symphonies – a true global collaboration!

The screening is part of Cape Town Opera’s SHORTS: A Festival of Short Operas, running at The Wave Theatre from 7 to 16 March. And the best part? Tickets are just R50 through Webtickets.

So, if you’re looking for a fun, cultural outing that might just spark a lifelong love of music in your child, don’t miss A Pocket Magic Flute. It’s opera – just the right size for little imaginations!
