Leadership starts in the cradle: how ECD lays the foundation for future leaders

When we think of leaders, we often imagine CEOs, politicians, or entrepreneurs making big decisions. But the truth is, leadership starts long before boardrooms and business plans… it starts in the earliest years of a child’s life.

The first five years matter most

Early Childhood Development (ECD) is more than just playtime and picture books. Research shows that a child’s brain develops faster in the first five years than at any other stage of life. These early experiences, whether positive or negative, shape how a child learns, socialises, problem-solves, and builds resilience.

Learning through play = Leading through life

In high-quality ECD settings, children learn essential “soft skills” through structured play:

  • Taking turns and sharing (teamwork)
  • Solving puzzles or navigating conflicts (critical thinking)
  • Expressing thoughts and feelings (communication and emotional intelligence)

These are the building blocks of leadership. When nurtured early, they grow into the life skills that help young people lead themselves and eventually others.

Why investing in ECD is a leadership strategy

Countries and communities that invest in ECD aren’t just investing in education, they’re investing in future leadership. Studies show that children who attend strong ECD programmes are more likely to complete school, find meaningful employment, and contribute positively to society.

The role of parents and caregivers

No matter if you’re a parent, grandparent, or early learning professional, your role is critical. Encouraging curiosity, praising effort, reading together, and creating a safe, loving environment all help build the self-worth and confidence of tomorrow’s leaders.

Leadership doesn’t begin at graduation. It begins at home, in preschool, on the playground, and in every moment a child is seen, heard, and supported. Because when we nurture young minds today, we shape powerful futures tomorrow.
