HYROX, the globally renowned fitness race, has taken South Africa by storm, making an electrifying debut in Johannesburg with a high-energy, record-breaking event. Hosted at the Johannesburg Expo Centre on 1 March 2025, this was the second HYROX event in South Africa following the successful Cape Town launch last September. The event not only cemented HYROX’s place in the local fitness scene but also contributed to the growing momentum of South Africa’s sports industry.
With a staggering 4 300 athletes participating (almost triple the number seen in Cape Town) HYROX Johannesburg was a sold-out spectacle. From elite competitors to first-timers, the event catered to all levels of fitness enthusiasts. The competition showcased HYROX’s signature blend of functional fitness challenges, including running, rowing, and endurance-based strength exercises, pushing competitors to their limits.
Adding to the intensity, Johannesburg’s event ranked as the second highest in elevation globally, providing an extra challenge for athletes. The excitement was palpable as more than 7 000 spectators flooded the venue, creating an electrifying atmosphere that underscored the vital role of supporters in driving athlete performance.
South Africa’s rising fitness stars delivered remarkable performances. Kyle Schoonbee claimed victory in the Men’s Pro division with a time of 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 9 seconds, while Danél Louw dominated the Women’s Pro division, crossing the finish line in 1 hour, 8 minutes, and 34 seconds. In the Mixed Doubles category, HYROX South Africa ambassador Vicky MacIntosh and partner Wesley Henning secured first place with a time of 1 hour and 50 seconds.
